Dit meldde journalist Hans Blommaert gisteren op Nu.nl. Het bericht was opgenomen in de Engelse krant Daily Mail.
Methylisothiazolinone is een conserveringsmiddel voor cosmetica, onder andere voor shampoo’s en werd in 2005 toegelaten. Bij een op de tien mensen die naar een dermatoloog gaan vanwege eczeem of een huidallergie wordt het probleem veroorzaakt door het conserveermiddel. Dat blijkt uit onderzoek van St. John’s Institute of Dermatology in Londen en Nottingham University Hospitals. Vergelijkbare onderzoeken uit Denemarken en Australië komen tot dezelfde bevindingen.
“Het is niet eerder voorgekomen dat zoveel mensen allergisch bleken te zijn voor een stof in cosmetica”, zegt Dr. John Fadden van het St. Thomas Hospital in Londen. “Het zal de komende tijd waarschijnlijk nog erger worden.”
Shampoo
“Het is een epidemie”, voegt Dr. John English van Nottingham Unitversity Hospitals er aan toe. “Er moet onmiddellijk iets tegen gedaan worden. We zien elke dag nieuwe patiënten. Mensen weten niet dat het door cosmetica komt en blijven de producten gebruiken.”
BeautyJournaal vult dit bericht nog aan met quotes van de Engelse blogger en cosmeticaformuleerder Colin, dit het volgende stelt op zijn blog: ‘ The implication of this report in Daily Mail is that there has been a large increase in allergic reactions over the last couple of years. Unfortunately it is impossible to tell what is really going on from reading that article. What we really need to know is what proportion of the users of a product preserved with Methylisothiazolinone alone have a reaction compared to the combination. Without that information all we can do is speculate.
As a formulator I really want to know the answer. Obviously you want to use the best option. It is a shame that the journalist from Daily Mail has chosen to make it a scare story. But it is also a shame that we folks in the cosmetic industry are so dependent on such a small number of preservatives. There are a lot of people out there who would really appreciate more choice.’
Inmiddels hebben Engelse dermatologen tot stof uitgeroepen tot de grootste allergene stof van 2013.
